Tunnel Beach gets its name from a tunnel that was excavated in the 1870’s to provide access to the beach for a wealthy Dunedin politician’s children. The Tunnel drops steeply with 72 steps through the cliff emerging in the cove you can see on the right of the frame. It’s the only access possible down to the beach along this section of coastline.
